The Allergy Clinic was founded in 1956 by Joseph I. Engler, M.D.,  who trained in allergy at the
National Institutes of Health and at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital. A native of Ft.
Worth, Texas, Dr. Joseph went to Texas Christian University as an undergraduate so he could stay
close to home and help out at
Engler's Western Wear, a family owned business in Ft. Worth from
1911 that just closed down a few years ago.
He then went to U.T.M.B. Galveston for medical school and his pediatric residency. After his
training at the N.I.H. and Mass General, he returned to Texas and went into private practice in
1956 in The Medical Towers, the "small" 17 story high rise now dwarfed by the St. Luke's Tower to
the south and Scurlock Towers to the north. He opened his first satellite office in Pasadena on
Tatar Street (now Pasadena Boulevard) in 1957. Dr. Joe is now 84 years old, but still very active.
Although retired from medical practice, he wakes early, hits the gym, and gets into the clinic
(Houston office) at about 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. He stays until noon or 1:00 p.m., has lunch with friends,
goes home to take a nap, and has dinner with his Hana, girlfriend of 19 years! They enjoy
traveling together, seeing the country, and visiting 12 grandchildren between them!
